London, 25.10.2024
I arrived in London as the financial community was gearing up for the first Labour budget in nearly fourteen years. Rachel Reeves, chancellor of the exchequer, has inherited a moribund, debt laden economy and the challenge is to produce a budget that doesn't upset bond markets but that supports investment in new technologies and infrastructure.
The architecture and skyline of the City in particular are changing, in a very stylish way. Tourism looks very strong and I enjoyed taking the Elizabeth Line across town.
London is the home of the European private assets industry, but there is arguably a long way to go, in terms of individual ownership of private equity and venture. This might change as the government is known to be studying the Canadian pension and investment model.
