How individual investors in private markets are allocating through slow exits, sticky inflation and AI disruption.

The annual Moonfare Investor Survey 2026 collected responses from over 300 private markets investors on the Moonfare platform between June and September 2026.

Their views matter more than ever. Private wealth is becoming one of the most important sources of capital in private markets and the industry is paying close attention to how private investors are positioning.

Key survey takeaways:

Investors keep backing private markets.

Individual allocators expect private markets to beat public markets. This is a view matched by deployment: four out of five made new allocations in the past year, despite slower distributions from existing holdings.

Hungry for cash returns, but not at a discount.

Only a small minority would readily sell existing positions at a discount for immediate liquidity. Still, nearly three quarters say distributions from existing investments are a factor before they commit more capital.

AI is where most investors are looking for opportunities.

Strategy preference for growth and VC investment nearly doubled in one year, from 26% to 46%. AI leads sector conviction, yet the majority of respondents also expect AI to significantly disrupt traditional software.

Geopolitics and inflation are top worries, again.

Geopolitics now tops investors’ macro concerns, followed by inflation and tariffs . Conflict-driven energy price hikes are keeping inflation sticky, which in turn is keeping interest rates higher for longer.
